Times Higher Education (THE) published its World University Rankings 2027 on 30 September 2026, covering 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories.

Mainland China now has 17 universities in the top 200, up from 13 after three editions at that number, and THE notes that 71 per cent of them improved their positions. Tsinghua University climbed one place to 11th, overtaking ETH Zurich, while Peking University held 13th place for the third year running.

According to THE, Chinese institutions improved on most metrics; their weakest area remains international outlook, in particular international co-authorship. It helps explain why Chinese universities are working hard to attract international students and researchers.
