To put more emphasis on quality in international admissions, China has introduced the China Scholastic Competency Assessment (CSCA). According to a Times Higher Education report from January 2026, most international applicants are required to sit the test from the 2026 intake.

The CSCA is compulsory for Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) applicants from this year. It is being phased in for other applicants and will be mandatory for all international undergraduate applicants by 2028.

The test is mainly taken online with remote proctoring, with test centres in some countries. Mathematics is compulsory for everyone, including arts and humanities applicants. Applicants to Chinese-taught programmes also take a "professional Chinese" paper (with humanities and STEM versions). Physics and chemistry are optional depending on the programme. Maths, physics and chemistry can be taken in Chinese or English. Pass thresholds have not yet been standardised, and universities may set their own minimum scores in future.
